4th year student essay contest

Laura Martin, a rising fourthyear student in the School of Dental Medicine, won an essay contest for her ability to write about oral health in a way that the layperson can understand. In her essay, titled Diabetes and Your Smile, Martin clearly conveyed her message about oral health awareness, explaining how, left untreated, diabetes can The essay contest is open to students currently in grades 9 through 12 from Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Note: Children, grandchildren, stepchildren, and members of the household of a federal judge or federal judiciary employee are excluded from the competition. The contest is open to high school juniors and seniors, and students currently enrolled in 2year or 4year undergraduate program at colleges or universities in the United States only.

We believe that getting an education is the best hope for young people to attain a rewarding career in the 21 st century. All students enrolled in their penultimate year at any NHEF Partner University are qualified to participate in the essay contest.

NHEF Partner Universities include Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University (Kano), University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Nigeria (Nsukka), and University of Port Harcourt.

Each year, an overall statewide essay contest winner is selected. That students essay is published in our statewide newspaper, and the young persons essay is displayed for the coming year at our museum in Columbia State Park.
